why is Steam specifically focusing on kernel-level anti-cheat here. so if an anticheat ran as the Windows SYSTEM user, which has full access to any process aside from PPL processes, that somehow doesn't count for disclosure to the end user? is the K-word really so important?

this feels like appealing to reddit knee-jerkers and it sucks. "modifying kernel level files" what. Nothing does this. Safedisc was decades ago

Steamworks article: "New Tool for Describing Anti-Cheat in Games", "A new dedicated field helps developers describe the anti-cheat provider used in a game"

the text says:
We've heard from more and more developers recently that they're looking for the right way to share anti-cheat information about their game with players. At the same time, players have been requesting more transparency around the anti-cheat services used in games, as well as the existence of any additional software that will be installed within the game.

With this feedback in mind, we've added a new field in the 'Edit Store Page' section where developers can indicate any anti-cheat software that is installed with the game. Once filled out, this data will be displayed to users on the game's Steam Store page.

an image is attached showing a Steam store listing disclosing it includes an anti-cheat software PunkBuster, next to another image showing a listing where that box is red and says "Uses Kernel Level Anti-Cheat"

this would be a good chance if it wasn't focusing on the complete wrong issue here. any software that requires installing as admin with a game you bought is something you have to bring to the consumer's attention more plainly, not buried in a EULA/Privacy Policy - not just "kernel level" anticheats

@nano exactly my thoughts - i think it should only be marked in red if that anti-cheat causes negative user experience. to me that'd be an always-running service/driver (e.g. PunkBuster), or an anti-cheat that prevents running under Linux or macOS

Don't recommend anyone Mull (a variation of Firefox for Android) without also telling about it deawbacks.

Its default user.js config includes lots of questionable choices, like disabling JIT, disabling WASM, disabling entire web APIs and messing with SSL configuration.

This means that half of webapps won't work, another half will be painfully slow and unresponsive, and yet another half won't ever open because of SSL errors (judging from my experience).

And you won't even know about it unless you go to about:config and see what's modified. Most people would just uninstall Mull at this point.

I remember reading some article dispelling myths around Bluesky and it’s probably aged badly now because Bluesky just launched a Series A funding round worth at least $15 million, with a huge chunk from a blockchain company and a smaller chunk from an explicitly labelled “research-drive crypto venture capital” fund.

Once you accept someone else’s money, you accept someone else’s control. That fifteen million is not a gift and will have to be repaid later in one form or another.

And as we all know… The only way social media can even make any money is growing so unfathomably large that it can make money from it’s users’ data for advertising.

...

...

Yas-O-Lantern »
@yassie_j@labyrinth.zone

@bronya yeah, Twitter is successful because it got sold. The whole point of a joint-stock corporation is to make value for shareholders. I would say Twitter achieved that goal. Zucc achieves that goal by making consistently massive profits to return as dividends.

What do the others do? Just bleed money until the investors get bored and cut them off.

Internet access should be regulated in a way similar to other necessary utilities like electricity or water

Meaning infrastructure should be obligatory open-access so you can use whatever ISP you want

And infrastructure operator should be *obligated* to connect you when requested for a fair non-discriminatory price

It's not acceptable to find yourself in a situation like "2 houses away have fiber but i don't and the ISP will not connect me without giving any reason"

...

Yas-O-Lantern »
@yassie_j@labyrinth.zone

@rail_ same is true for mobile networks. We one national power grid, but multiple energy suppliers. Why do we not have one national mobile network grd and multiple suppliers there? @yassie_j @rail_ another fun one, the cottage I live in has a flat built on top of it, it's been empty since before fibre became available. When I got fibre the openreach techs realised they needed a cherrypicker to access one of the telecoms "poles" because it's actually a bracket on the chimney of another house. They were able to arrange that within a day, because they have more resources than god. A couple moved in upstairs a couple weeks ago, a contractor called Circet arrived on Wednesday to run fibre to the flat. They discovered the cherrypicker problem. Unlike openreach, they can't get the equipment on site until the 29th! If they had proper communication and logging, they'd have already known it was necessary.

@rail_@bark.lgbt openreach is actually a private company, its just because of its history ofcom has a lot of regulatory power due to how much market share it has.

it being owned by BT caused a bit of a problem with its FTTP rollout as BT missused funds intended for it to buy EE, which made the goverment force them to make Openreach its own legal entity

...

Yas-O-Lantern »
@yassie_j@labyrinth.zone

@miawgogo @rail_ yeah Openreach is still a subsidiary of BT Group. This also has its own problems, primary that Openreach’s fibre rollout only exists because the Government removed regulations, primarily the price cap. Now there is no price cap on fibre connections, so Openreach can charge ISPs as much as it wants to use it’s network (which is passed onto consumers). While this has meant that Openreach can fund its expansion, this also means the UK has some of the highest prices for fibre in Europe.

And of course, despite its massive profits, Openreach still receives billions in subsidies for it’s work.

Openreach as part of the BT Group did use the profits it had to allow BT Group to buy a mobile operator and ISP, EE, which means that taxpayer (theoretically) could have been used in part to close that sale.
