why is Steam specifically focusing on kernel-level anti-cheat here. so if an anticheat ran as the Windows SYSTEM user, which has full access to any process aside from PPL processes, that somehow doesn't count for disclosure to the end user? is the K-word really so important?
this feels like appealing to reddit knee-jerkers and it sucks. "modifying kernel level files" what. Nothing does this. Safedisc was decades ago
also PunkBuster is kernel-level on Valve's favourite CPU architecture, Legacy Intel i386, so idk why they didn't put a big scary red warning about that
@ipg i like the whole showing exactly what anti-cheat the game uses thing, thats useful information (would be even more useful if it showed whether or not the developer opted into proton support ) but validating blind hatred of a technology that varies wildly in implementation is uh interesting
@nano exactly my thoughts - i think it should only be marked in red if that anti-cheat causes negative user experience. to me that'd be an always-running service/driver (e.g. PunkBuster), or an anti-cheat that prevents running under Linux or macOS
@ipg im all for this but id like to see them add something about whether it runs on proton or not, could just pull from protondb
the deck verified status isnt enough imo
post character limit but it’s about how many characters all your post are allowed to have, cumulatively
you’re only allowed 20,000 characters, and every post you make decreases that counter, don’t waste them fucker
imagine if gifs died and we just used webms with looping enabled
peep the horror, a 5MB GIF
vs
AV1 webm, 32.7 KB
I am AV1's biggest fan Bring that shit to the web
Please
@privateger only if you buy me a hardware encoder ::
@privateger ok nvm i just tested ffmpeg's svt-av1 on the source screen recording behind latest video i posted (1080p and about 1 min so blehg) and it converted in like 13 seconds. av1 may actually be workable now
@kopper@brain.d.on-t.work SVT is very fast nowadays
@privateger rav1e the so-called fastest one (idk i used the defaults on ffmpeg) can't even reach 1x speed on the same video file i just never tried looking into svt (and of course aom is a joke in terms of performance)
@kopper @privateger svt-av1 speed is faster than rav1e and aom. If you want to use rav1e and aom, I recommend use av1an and then select them as what you want to use encoder.
@xwyqi @privateger honestly i just never expected to see av1 encode at higher than like 0.25x speed i don't particularly care about the differences between encoders given i'm more than happy to post videos on 480p to limit file size
@privateger imagine if everyone other than safari also let you put videos onto imgs which then acted just like gifs
bluesky news: a trick with their facets system allows you to duplicate what you said so as long as you're fine with the rest of your post being an exact copy of the first 300 characters you can post up to 600 characters. i think. maybe longer even
Don't recommend anyone Mull (a variation of Firefox for Android) without also telling about it deawbacks.
Its default user.js config includes lots of questionable choices, like disabling JIT, disabling WASM, disabling entire web APIs and messing with SSL configuration.
This means that half of webapps won't work, another half will be painfully slow and unresponsive, and yet another half won't ever open because of SSL errors (judging from my experience).
And you won't even know about it unless you go to about:config and see what's modified. Most people would just uninstall Mull at this point.
@cybertailor some rando's firefox fork and copying random about:config snippets on the internet for a vain attempt at privacy and security name a better duo
@cybertailor i can't count how many times i had to tell clueless librewolf users that resistFingerprinting being on by default broke the client-side avatar cropping in misskey
i'm fucking BEGGING platforms to PLEASE GOD put a sign in button next to any sign up button, and make them either equal or emphasize sign in
if i click a button that needs you to be logged in, ask me if i want to login or signup
don't give me a big sign up button and then hide the sign in button way down in the footer
"bluesky does not federate at all" is an extremely annoying of a take but it's technically like 10% right which is more than the 0% right most other annoying misinformation tends to be
@weirdtreething I love it when I forget to hit CTRL+D and my entire classroom starts thinking my laptop is a bomb
@weirdtreething I'm a dumb and didn't know how to do that unfortunately
This was also on what I consider to be the Worst Chromebook Experience I've ever had. ChromeOS is so much better on ARM from what I've seen and I never wanna touch my x86 Chromebook ever again tbh
@weirdtreething (arm Linux on my spin 513 is also way better too)
@weirdtreething I would love that just make the custom graphics this stretched out over random parts (i have no idea what graphics can be replaced)
I've had people tell me they're jealous of how thin I am. but. Honestly the reason I'm so thin is because I eat like 2.5 meals a day. I say 2.5 because my lunch is usually pretty light if I even have one. Granted, this is FAR better than when I had an actual eating disorder and had a couple of granola bars and sometimes dinner as my meals
@julia@eepy.moe I put a fair bit of work into gaining weight, especially after covid, and I'm proud of what I got, even if there's a part of me terrified it'll go out of control.
@julia@eepy.moe gaining weight is not easy if that's not how you naturally trend
@PearlescentFerret@woem.men yeahhhhhh I've been trying to put on a bit more but I genuinely just can't. I can't get myself to eat thee times a day, its just. really hard
@PearlescentFerret@woem.men the reason I want to put on more weight is so that my boobs can grow
@julia@eepy.moe Feels like jealousy over [body shape] is a fast way to develop body dysmorphia Better to have it under control than suffer with something unhealthy But we get it, we have our ideal preference too but just loathing over it makes us horribly depressed until we stop
@natty@astolfo.social I mean, yeah, that is a way to get dysmorphic really quickly. I'm saying other people have said they're jealous of how thin I am tho, not me being jealous of other people being thinthat said I am absolutely jealous over certain body features and I doubt theres much that can change that
@julia@eepy.moe @natty@astolfo.social ribcage reduction surgery when 😭
@PearlescentFerret@woem.men @natty@astolfo.social its funny you say that my ribs were actually not exactly the same thing but kinda related idk
@julia@eepy.moe @natty@astolfo.social like sunken sternum? I have that but not to extreme; just means I'll never have cleavage
@PearlescentFerret@woem.men @natty@astolfo.social it's called pectus excavatum (fair warning the images you'll get for it are pretty intense)
this has to stop
me ca. 2015: "I need to build this PC in a completely static-free environment otherwise everything will DIE"
me last night, hotplugging PCIe cards and M.2 drives: "compputer👍 "

Would it fucking kill some of you people to use the content warning feature and just mark your post as political
I've spent way too much time just writing content filters now because it seems we've forgotten fedi has this awesome feature to make posts opt-in
@inderix@allthingstech.social i think politics is something that really doesnt need a cw tbh, it could apply to literally everything and anything ever. the more controversial parts yeah but the majority of politics is pretty normal
@1ts0nly4stro I don't believe that should deter the use of content warnings, especially when people (like me) maybe want to open fedi and not be reminded of the shit state of their country for 5 minutes
@inderix@allthingstech.social fair point, but im quite the opposite. i really like talking about politics but thats just me, politics literally ruined social media so 😀
@1ts0nly4stro I've always tried to steer clear because it seems like something that I can never say I'm fully confident to talk about, and I don't wanna absorb myself into all of it because it always seems like an absolute mess
@inderix I complain about this quite regularly. Though I don't see too much any longer due to the filters I have in place now. I'd say 90% of it gets blocked by my filters.
i've got a habit of binging listening to a certain album while i'm really big into a game so any time i listen to that album it reminds me of that game even though otherwise they're completely unrelated. fascinating how music can stick like that. (also goes both ways - the game reminds me of the album)
@ipg Some of my old favourites basically came with an album. I still listen to them occasionally - the music for RRT2P and Tropico were absolute bangers, for example, and I'll always have a soft spot for the industrial age piano of Civ III.
@ipg I associate https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=s58oyZ8-z7Q with Artemis from Hades because that's what I listened to while farming for her hearts
I remember reading some article dispelling myths around Bluesky and it’s probably aged badly now because Bluesky just launched a Series A funding round worth at least $15 million, with a huge chunk from a blockchain company and a smaller chunk from an explicitly labelled “research-drive crypto venture capital” fund.
Once you accept someone else’s money, you accept someone else’s control. That fifteen million is not a gift and will have to be repaid later in one form or another.
And as we all know… The only way social media can even make any money is growing so unfathomably large that it can make money from it’s users’ data for advertising.
Like for rls, the only two majorly successful social media platforms are:
@yassie_j@labyrinth.zone What about TikTok tho? They're definitely successful because everyone knows about them and they have huge control over their users (even if they were bleeding money they're basically a core part of young people's lives today which is worth a lot as well)
@tcplx oh yes, they have the same space as Zucc - huge and therefore incredibly wealthy!
@yassie_j it’s extremely funny how zuck is somehow the only person on earth that successfully turned his social media platforms into a sustainable business
platforms like twitter, reddit and even chat platforms like telegram never recorded a profit afaik and likely never will
@bronya yeah, Twitter is successful because it got sold. The whole point of a joint-stock corporation is to make value for shareholders. I would say Twitter achieved that goal. Zucc achieves that goal by making consistently massive profits to return as dividends.
What do the others do? Just bleed money until the investors get bored and cut them off.
when I think about it, bluesky handles have a really good side effect for marketing
one of the reasons tiktok blew up as much as it did (other than the quarantine of course) was the tiktok watermark that appears on every video downloaded from it
if someone has seen tiktok’s logo on a video they watched somewhere else, there’s a higher chance of them downloading it for themselves
kind of how someone could see “bsky.social” in someone’s handle on a screenshot
or maybe I’m overthinking it
@arctic it is, when you show someone bluesky, you show bsky.social
when you show someone fedi, you need to say “well it’s from this software but there’s actually multiple instances of this and blah blah blah” and they will call you crazy
Internet access should be regulated in a way similar to other necessary utilities like electricity or water
Meaning infrastructure should be obligatory open-access so you can use whatever ISP you want
And infrastructure operator should be *obligated* to connect you when requested for a fair non-discriminatory price
It's not acceptable to find yourself in a situation like "2 houses away have fiber but i don't and the ISP will not connect me without giving any reason"
@rail_ same is true for mobile networks. We one national power grid, but multiple energy suppliers. Why do we not have one national mobile network grd and multiple suppliers there? It’s so much, duplicated, wasted effort. This is especially true in cities where all four major networks will occupy very similar cellular sites. Why??? That’s just a waste of resources.
@Len0w0ThinkBad @rail_ how many of these alt nets do we need
privatizing national telecoms was such a dumb fucking mistake
we should've transferred them into state-owned infrastructure operators
that's a thing only in the UK afaik, which is a very rare Br*tain W
@rail_@bark.lgbt openreach is actually a private company, its just because of its history ofcom has a lot of regulatory power due to how much market share it has. it being owned by BT caused a bit of a problem with its FTTP rollout as BT missused funds intended for it to buy EE, which made the goverment force them to make Openreach its own legal entity
@miawgogo @rail_ yeah Openreach is still a subsidiary of BT Group. This also has its own problems, primary that Openreach’s fibre rollout only exists because the Government removed regulations, primarily the price cap. Now there is no price cap on fibre connections, so Openreach can charge ISPs as much as it wants to use it’s network (which is passed onto consumers). While this has meant that Openreach can fund its expansion, this also means the UK has some of the highest prices for fibre in Europe.
And of course, despite its massive profits, Openreach still receives billions in subsidies for it’s work.
Openreach as part of the BT Group did use the profits it had to allow BT Group to buy a mobile operator and ISP, EE, which means that taxpayer (theoretically) could have been used in part to close that sale.
It's so funny that CD will now be soon considered the "retro" physical music format over vinyl
@endali I’m go cry
absolutely tired of open source culture
