Something that I don't see people talking about nearly enough is how much of an effect the complexity of the web has had on centralizing itThere are exactly 3 "proper" browsers currently being developed
2 are by multi-trillion-dollar corporations and the third is funded by one of the first 2 while still struggling
We have to accept that this ever-increasing complexity needs to stop
For security, for privacy; above all for maintainability
Complexity is the enemy of software development, so why have we built a platform specifically for fostering it?
I am a ceramic artist who enjoys making little ceramic critters. I'm most inspired by forest animals, but I love pretty much all kinds of animals. If I had all the money in the world, I would open a wildlife sanctuary in the woods. But right now I'm content to create my own little menagerie of cute things. I'm hoping to become a part of a supportive online community of other artists, art lovers, and friends. Thanks for reading!

@SoniEx2 the answer for email is spam. i feel like both forums and fedi are quite reasonable to run tech wise (their challenges only really show up in social ways). matrix just sucks and irc is ancient software where people just didn't care about anyone not willing to dive into reading source code to bring up a basic server

In the sense of why you need your own email server Like I and friends use Google's public IMAP for git send-email, I never had issues with that, and I always hear people complaining about it, but I never saw any actual problems other than the configurations being confusing (which is a valid complaint, just not the one I hear)

@gwenthekween for contributing, you don't strictly need it (unless you're on one of the snakeoil mail providers that don't let you use SMTP), but for letting other people contribute you at the very least need a mailing list (if you want to work in public) which no "personal" mail service will accept under their TOS, so you either pay through the nose for one of those marketing mail servers or run your own (or try to find someone else already hosting mailing list software and ask if they'll let you in)

Fun fact: it is literally, objectively impossible to legally watch Ultra HD Blu-Rays on a desktop computer, because Cyberlink PowerDVD is the only legal way to watch Blu-Rays of any sort on PC at all and it dropped support for UHD BRs.
Once again, DRM exclusively and disproportionately affects legal users without being a blip in the way of pirates (MakeMKV works just fine)
The only reason anyone uses the former over the latter is due to Google abusing its power to effectively force websites to not use the latter, as 2 out of the 3 major browsers don't implement it in any capacity; in fact, they actually removed support.
This post was also inspired by the lack of a WEBP implementation on 9front, while JXL was ported by sigrid.
